HMM is investing €150 million (approx. KRW 240 billion) to expand its Algeciras Container Terminal (TTIA) in Spain. According to HMM, an investment proposal was submitted to the Algeciras Port Authority on June 30. HMM will contribute €35 million, with the remainder funded by CMA CGM and external loans.
Currently handling 1.6 million TEU annually, TTIA will expand to 460,000㎡ by 2028, increasing capacity to 2.1 million TEU. Upon completion of the second phase, it could handle 2.8 million TEU, with operations extended to 2065.
An HMM official stated, “The Algeciras Terminal is a key hub for European route competitiveness and revenue generation,” emphasizing plans for further overseas terminal investments. However, concerns arise over financial strain from the large-scale investment and potential operational inefficiencies during construction.
