In a statement released on April 6, the union sharply criticized the Korea Shipping Association for remarks suggesting that a strike by the HMM union would have little impact. The union accused the association of abandoning its duty to protect the shipping industry and its members’ rights, claiming it has become a mouthpiece for specific powers. It demanded an immediate apology and responsible explanation for statements that undermine the value of workers. The union further pointed out that the association appears to uncritically represent the positions of the government and the Korea Development Bank, behaving more like a government spokesperson than an independent organization. The union emphasized that the headquarters relocation is not a simple office move but a serious issue that could lead to the outflow of skilled maritime personnel, threaten workers’ livelihoods, and weaken national shipping competitiveness. It called for the immediate halt of the relocation plan and for the association to clearly express its opposition. The union warned that if the relocation is forced through, it will initiate lawful industrial action, including the possibility of a general strike.
